Despina is a private rescuer based in Heraklion, Crete, dedicated to helping stray cats in need. Together with their companion David, they finance TNR programs, rescue operations, and foster cats, working tirelessly to find them forever homes. They also care for two cat colonies, providing food, medical care, and neutering. For nearly eight years, they have been supporting stray cats, even before permanently settling in Heraklion. Every cat in need—whether found on the streets or through online pleas for help—receives their care. Since all of this is funded privately, donations are greatly appreciated to help cover veterinary expenses and ongoing rescue efforts.

A FAMILY RUN SANCTUARY
- It all began over 25 years ago when Barbara and Fanis were asked to rescue a small donkey that belonged to a local farmer in his nineties who was no longer able to look after it. They have a larger olive orchard next to our home, an ideal place for a donkey to feel safe. So they called her Olive and built her a small stable. She was very affectionate and appreciative so Barbara, Fanis and the family fell in love with donkeys.

Patty is originally from the Caucasus (Russia) and of Avar nationality, has been living in Greece since 2001 and in Crete since 2002. Her journey in animal rescue began in Heraklion, where she witnessed the suffering of countless stray kittens. Determined to help, she started feeding, treating, and sterilizing the cats in her neighborhood, even taking many into her home. In 2021, after moving to her husband's village, she continued her rescue efforts, caring for more cats and also finding homes for abandoned dogs and puppies. Her dedication to animal welfare has saved many lives and continues to make a difference.
For the past 3 years, Uwe & Craciella have been rescuing cats in Crete—especially those found sick or injured. They provide foster care until the cats find loving homes and also take care of the stray cats in their village, Neo Chorio.
Their daily efforts include feeding, sterilizing, and monitoring the cats’ health. When a cat is sick or injured, they make sure it receives veterinary care and the necessary medication. To support their work, they built a secure space as well as a protected outdoor area.
Uwe & Craciella also support fellow rescuers in their region and organize TNR (trap-neuter-return) campaigns beyond their village whenever spots at free neutering clinics are available.
20-30 cats live with them, either indoors or around their home.
Uwe and Craciella fund almost everything privately, but they have now reached their financial limits. Living on one pension, their savings are already depleted.
